An Honor
I was watching a television program tonight in which I heard this beautiful statement.
"It is an honor to nurse a new life back to where it ought to be despite the pain for all involved."
They were talking about a nurse helping an infant born addicted to her mother's opiates. The helpless child screamed endlessly as the nurse patiently walked the halls with her so she wouldn't have to be alone. Tragic indeed for all involved.
But I think there are so many other ways in which we can be called upon to help bring lives back to where they ought to be.
The world teaches us to always be worried about ourselves, and self-care certainly is important. But the Savior said we find ourselves when we lose ourselves in service. Not exhaustion, but service.
President Bonnie L Oscarson explained, "One of the best ways to increase feelings of self-worth is to show, through our concern and service to others, that we have much of worth to contribute. I encourage you (young women) to raise your hands to volunteer and to put those hands to work when you see needs around you. As you fulfill your covenant responsibilities and participate in building the kingdom of God, blessings will flow into your life and you’ll discover the deep and lasting joy of discipleship."
Recognizing the true honor that comes from fulfilling our covenant responsibilities even in the hardest jobs is a piece of that deep and lasting joy.
Jesus is called the Savior because he saves. And he asks us to participate in that saving work. But he leaves it up to us to step up to the challenge.
