Lean On Me
I was going through photos at my parents' home today and came across this photo of my Grandma and Grandpa Holderness.
Grandma had many health challenges including osteosarcoma in her leg as a young teen.
She would spend much of her life relying on her "good leg" but was an example of how to focus on what there was to celebrate and be thankful for.
Written on the back in her familiar scrawl were the words, "The first time I went to church without crutches in almost a year. (Of course Dad was there to lean on)."
Reading this I could picture my Grandpa offering his arm and always ready with a steadying hand. He saw and admired her strength but knew that even the strongest of us need someone to lean on.
She called him her tower of strength.
Elder Robert D Hales similarly spoke of his sweet spouse, Mary. "I cannot speak of giving care without acknowledging the special caregiver in my life—the Savior’s special disciple to me—my eternal companion, Mary. She has given all in compassionate nurturing and love. Her hands reflect His gentle, sustaining touch. I would not be here without her. And with her, I will be able to endure to the end and be with her in eternal life. If you are suffering deeply, with others or alone, I urge you to let the Savior be your caregiver. Lean on His ample arm."
What a beautiful goal.
To reflect the Savior as we offer our arms to others and especially our spouses.
And to lean on one another and ultimately the Savior.
Who is always there.
