Hobbies


 


It's been a busy few weeks for me as I adjust to new schedules.  I was having a checkin conversation with my boss and she asked how my new year was going. 

I told her I was tired but figuring it out.  But that I wasn't finding time to take pictures or get out in nature as much as I like.  I'm just too worn out after work.  She reminded me that a truly balanced life finds room and time for our creative spirits as well as our duties.  

Sometimes that is easier said than done. But I do believe it's important. For many reasons. 

As President Russell M Nelson so wisely shared, 

"Hobbies can aid in spiritual development. Worthy music, dance, art, and writing are among the creative activities that can enrich the soul. A good hobby can dispel heartache and give zest to life."

  This local story caught my attention and has had me contemplating who and how I serve and share the love of God. "The Elkhart County Jail Ministry held its first-ever hymn-sing inside the Elkhart County Jail. A local Amish choir from Middlebury made rounds throughout the jail, singing two hymns in each ward. Hearing the slow, melodic songs reverberating off the concrete walls and ceiling had a calming and soothing effect on all of us. There were standing ovations, hands raised in worship, men singing along to songs they recognized from their childhood, requests for favorite hymns being shouted from the back of the room...and tears. Better Than You Think

 The  movie "Greyhound"  tells the fictional, but historically accurate story of a captain of a warship tasked with the difficult job of leading a convoy of ships through a portion of the Atlantic which was outside the range of air support during World War II.   (Partial spoiler alert- I am going to talk about the film so if you want to watch it first stop here😊). Pilots in the air could see and attack the German U-boats from above but only had the fuel range to fly a certain distance from shores.  During the war, the U-boats destroyed more than 3500 allied ships, including unarmed merchants.   The ships would group into convoys to travel across the out of range portion of the journey which took about five days to cross.  The U-boats would group into "wolf packs" and generally attack at night when the ships lost visual support.   I don't want to ruin the story but the captain faces many losses and feels them incredibly deeply.  Even when his...

How do You Feel Close to God?

  Feeling Close to God I was asked a great question recently.  How do you feel close to God? I've been thinking and studying about that a lot. I know what helps and hurts in my own situation but I wanted to hear from others. Because it's an intensely unique and personal experience for each person. It depends on personality, experience, emotions, current situation, and more. So I posed the question in Sunday School yesterday and again at Seminary this morning.   Here are some of the answers I received. In the quiet and stillness. In nature- specifically looking at creations He made for us. Listening to music- various kinds for various people.  At church. When I am with good friends. At seminary. At FSY, Girls Camp or other youth camps with other youth. When I pray. When I read scriptures. When I repent- I feel farther away when I have things that need cleared up.
