Hearts
I remember one day when I asked some fifth graders if they were in charge what changes they would make.
The overall consensus was piñatas and pizza every day.
Fun right?
But is that really what is best for them?
Of course not but they lack the perspective we have.
To be fair, I still love piñatas and pizza but day after day it wouldn't take long to feel the negative health effects.
A friend recently shared this quote.
"Follow your heart" has ended more marriages, caused more addictions, mutilated more bodies, destroyed more souls and ended more lives than Satan imagined. It's one of Hell's most effective slogans. Don't follow your heart, follow the One Who created it."
I thought about that long and hard.
What does Christ say?
"Come, follow me."
"Lose yourself."
"I am the way."
In Romans 1:25 Paul phrases it this way-
"Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever."
Serving the creature, or ourselves, more than God.
It reminds of the slogan I recently heard for a beauty product - "Worship yourself and the world will follow."
Now, to be clear there are many very true and important parts of taking care of ourselves.
Self-advocacy, boundary setting, not running faster than we have strength, resting when needed, learning line upon line.
But God has to come first.
And following Christ will help us find the ways to meet all of those things in HIS way.
A plan designed for us by Heavenly Parents who know and love us far more than we know ourselves.
Because even though we are adults, sometimes following our hearts we are still chasing piñatas and pizza for today.
And what God has in store for us is eternal happiness.
