Beads of Faith

 



As I was driving, I looked down at my favorite bracelet. 


A friend and mentor gave it to me several years ago. 


It’s my faith over fear bracelet. 


As I looked down, I noticed the individual beads and thought about how faith is built one bead of action at a time. 


And I thought about that tarnished cross and how imperfect and rough my offerings are at times. 


But Jesus Christ is that strand in the middle holding on no matter what. 


I want my faith to grow!


Sister Lisa L Harkness explained how that can happen.  “Our faith grows as we experiment on the word of God with hope and diligence, trying our very best to follow Christ’s teachings. Our faith increases as we choose to believe rather than doubt, forgive rather than judge, repent rather than rebel. Our faith is refined as we patiently rely on the merits and mercy and grace of the Holy Messiah.”


Believe rather than doubt.  One bead.


Forgive rather than judge.  Another bead.


Repent rather than rebel.  Another.


All while we patiently rely on that firm strand of Jesus Christ.

  This local story caught my attention and has had me contemplating who and how I serve and share the love of God. "The Elkhart County Jail Ministry held its first-ever hymn-sing inside the Elkhart County Jail. A local Amish choir from Middlebury made rounds throughout the jail, singing two hymns in each ward. Hearing the slow, melodic songs reverberating off the concrete walls and ceiling had a calming and soothing effect on all of us. There were standing ovations, hands raised in worship, men singing along to songs they recognized from their childhood, requests for favorite hymns being shouted from the back of the room...and tears. Carol of the Bells

  Carol of the Bells.   A hauntingly beautiful song from Ukranian roots. Written in 1914 by Leontovych, the song was first called  "Shchedryk" and based on an ancient tune handed down through the years.  It was about nature and springtime and, in particular, watching for the coming. From 1918-1921 a brief period of Ukraine as an independent republic called for a push in sharing their culture.  Consequently, Shchedryk was taken onto the world stage by a traveling choir.  When that choir came to North America and performed at Carnegie Hall it is believed to have led to the introduction of the tune to Peter Wilhousky.   He wrote the lyrics which made the now popular tune, a Christmas hit  that has continued to play a prominent role in our musical celebrations ever since. Humble Seeker of Happiness

  We are traveling west and as I looked over the map I realized my friend, Patti, lives not far off our route.   We've taken this route before and each time I think about her.  But this time I reached out and messaged her.  Not only could we stay there, but she would have dinner waiting.   Watching her come down the sidewalk with a big smile and welcoming me into her arms was a moment of pure joy mixed with a bit of disbelief.  22 years is a long time. Ella thought it was a bit crazy.  "But these are strangers!"   By the time we left this morning she agreed she now also had an acquaintance in South Dakota. People are worth taking the chance on.  It won't always work out.  I have some friendships that have fizzled out.  Others that take a lot of work.  Some that my insensitivity has eroded.   But this one was beautiful.  I'm so thankful I accepted the assignment to be visiting teaching partners with her so m...
